Passing the COT exam could earn you $7,384 more each year

Ophthalmic technicians who earn their COT® certification stand out in the job market and command higher salaries.

Publicly available IJCAHPO wage data from its 2020 Allied Ophthalmic Personnel Salary and Benefits Study puts COA-level pay at $21.99 per hour and COT-level pay at $25.54 per hour. Annualized over full-time work, that is about $7,384 more per year for COT-level technicians, a pay bump of just over 16 percent.

The COT credential demonstrates advanced knowledge and skills that employers value, opening doors to better positions and career advancement in ophthalmology. Our comprehensive prep course gives you everything you need to pass the exam with confidence.

FAQ

  • How long do I have to complete a course?

The COA® course gives you 6 months of access. The COT® course is also 6 months, and the COMT® course gives you 9 months. That's plenty of time to study at your own pace, even if you're working full-time.

  • What if I don't pass my exam?

Our courses are designed to help you pass on your first attempt, and our students' track record reflects that. If you don't pass, you'll need to take the exam again.

  • I'm not certified yet. Which course should I start with?

Start with the COA® Exam Prep Course. The COA® (Certified Ophthalmic Assistant) is the entry-level certification and the foundation for the COT® and COMT.® Not sure you're ready? Download our free COA® Exam Starter Kit to see where you stand.

  • I'm a practice manager. Can I buy courses for my whole team?

Absolutely. You'll have the option to add multiple seats at checkout.

  • How are your courses different from free YouTube videos or textbooks?

Our courses are structured exam prep — narrated lessons in the order you need them, quizzes, clinical pearls from working technologists, and personal tutoring when you get stuck. Free resources can supplement your study, but they can't replace a guided curriculum built by people who've taken and taught these exams for decades.
